Conversations with the new MBA Students…

June 18, 2002 (Tuesday)

Sri Sathya Sai in the Sai Kulwant Hall
Swami : Andaru Kurchhanarru. (All are seated). Emi Samacharam? (What news?) (Swami called the student for whom He had materialised a medallion the previous evening.) Did you wear it? (The student tried to tell about a thread for wearing the medallion. Swami materialised a gold chain, attached the medallion to it and put it around the student’s neck. Swami then took a letter from a first year M.B.A. student. The student’s mother had written the letter in the Gujarati script. After reading the four page letter for about two minutes) Where is your father’s brother?

Student : He is in Bombay, Swami.

Swami : Father is having a lot of tension, isn’t it?

Student : Yes, Swami.

Swami : (Taking a letter from another student) M.B.A.? How old are you?

Student : 20, Swami.

Prof. Anil Kumar places a cloth on the floor where water is falling.

Swami : Enta Help Chestunnavo! (How much help are you doing?)

Prof. A. K. : Swami, students might slip when they hand You their letters.

Swami : (Smiling) Neemeede Padtaaru (They will fall on you only).

Prof. A. K. : Swami, I have kept the cloth for my sake only!

Swami : (Taking a letter from a student) From top to toe, you have confusion and depression. Dunnapota. Study well. Don’t think about all these things as long as you are studying. (To the students sitting behind the teachers)
I will not take letters from you since you have to jump over the teachers. (Taking a letter from another student) Is this your letter or your sister’s letter?

Student : It is my letter, Swami.

Swami : What is your name?

Student : Swami, Jyoti.

Swami : Jyoti is sister’s name.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, maybe that is not his full name.

Swami : (To another student) What is your name?

Student : Swami, Sai Krishna Dahal.

Swami : (To another student, Rohit Dawar) Where are your glasses? Nahin Dalta? (Don’t you wear them?)

Prof. A. K. : Swami, he is wearing contact lenses.

Swami : Oh! So that is why you don’t have to wear them. But you should not rub your eyes. (Taking a letter from a student) Exercise every morning and evening. You don’t look good like this. Anand, where did you go yesterday? I know. You think that I see so many boys. So how can I remember? (Warden tries to tell about the research scholar who underwent an operation.) They performed the surgery thrice to remove the stone in the kidney. If the stone is powdered completely, they can remove it. Kadupu Anukunnara Dosakaya Anukunnara? (What do you take it to be, stomach or cucumber?) Be seated, I will return.

Swami went into the interview room and returned with an envelope in His hand.

Swami : I got a cheque. A student sent it to Me by post. They are sending money. (Swami was looking upset) The cheque is for INR 37,500. The student wrote to Me that he got a dream the day before yesterday in which he was instructed to send money to Me. (Swami tears the cheque).

Prof. A. K. : Swami, You tore the cheque! Swami, he was instructed in his dream to send the money.

Swami : Then, let him send the money in the dream. (After sometime). I am giving scholarship to nine boys.

(Editor’s Note: While there are no fees for the education received at the Sri Sathya Sai Educational Institutions, the students have to pay nominal hostel fees. However, for select students who cannot afford this amount as well, Swami would pay their Hostel Mess Fees so that their parents were not burdened.)

(Swami called a student whose name is Jeelani). Your father is working as a Primary School teacher. I am giving you scholarship.

(Swami called another student). What is your father doing?

Student : He is a Collector, Swami.

Swami : What is his salary?

Student : ` 11,000 per month, Swami.

Swami : (To the other student) You are feeling bad that I gave him and did not give you. I will give you also. (Swami created a ring and put it on his finger.) Correct size. Adige Vaariki Icchedi Ledu. Adagani Vaarike Icchedi. (I don’t give to the one who asks. I only give to the one who doesn’t ask).

Prof. A. K. : Swami, as one keeps asking, he goes lower and lower.

Swami : (Taking a letter from another student) Do you play flute?

Student : Yes, Swami. (Swami patted his cheek.)

Swami : (Taking a letter from another student) Tabla?

Student : Yes, Swami.

Swami : How many years?

Student : Swami, I started playing in Brindavan.

Students : (All together) Swami Songs.

Swami : Group songs?

Students : Yes, Swami.

Swami gave the much awaited permission. The students presented a programme of songs and speeches. There were five speeches interspersed with songs, mainly those in Telugu and composed by Swami. When the students sang a Telugu song, Swami made corrections in the song.

The speeches were primarily in English, but interspersed with poems in different languages including Sanskrit, Telugu, Hindi and Gujarati. One of the students from the first year M.B.A. class, Sanjay Mahalingam mentioned about the ‘monkey mind’ in his speech. Swami immediately corrected him saying, “Don’t think like that. It is mankind and not monkey mind.” Another student from the first year M.B.A. class, Shashank Shah, shared his experience as to how he had lost hope about writing the MBA entrance exams for Swami’s Institute as his final year exams for the B.Com. course in Mumbai University overlapped with the entrance exams at Prasanthi Nilayam. So, he wrote a letter to Swami and prayed for His intervention. And miraculously, for the first time in the history of Mumbai University, instead of postponement, the exams were advanced and completed in April itself. As a result, Shashank could write his entrance exams in May and finally was blessed to be in Swami’s presence as His student in the M.B.A. programme.

After the programme, Swami said “Very happy.” He said that the boys had been practicing for the last two days. He profusely blessed them by raising His Abhaya Hasta (Divine Hand). Swami got up and went into the interview room.
