Sri Sathya Sai on Yoga and Meditation – Part 2

Now when is Dharana supposed to be practiced? Time is divided as per the three Gunas (attributes) – Satva,Rajas and Tamas. The earth has the three attributes – Satva, Rajas and Tamas. Air that is completely Satvic, goes away from earth as vapour. Liquid has Rajasic quality. Something that has the nature of moving all the time (activity) is said to be Rajasic. Anything that is motionless is said to be having a Tamasic nature. Physics is Tamasic. Chemistry is Rajasic. The attribute that is in relation to both these is Satvic nature. Bioscience is Satvic nature. Thus there is an attribute pertaining to each of these subjects.

Likewise there is classification in the day based on the three gunas. The time from 8 pm to 4 am is Tamasic in nature. Even the birds and beasts sleep during this time. This is considered as the time of devils! This is the most favourable time for demons. For all those activities pertaining to Tamasic nature it is favourable time. The time from morning 8 am to 4 pm is Rajasic in nature. Everyone gets engrossed in their own activities. All the employees and officers work in their offices between 8 am and 4 pm. That span of 8 hours is Rajasic in nature. 4 am to 8 am is Satvic and 4 pm to 8 pm is Satvic. Thus 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening, total 8 hours is Satvic. Satvic time starts from 4 o’clock in the morning. You all should be awake by then. You have to start your spiritual practice or studies in that time. Then the state of mind is pure. That is the time for pious deeds. You should not sleep during that time. You don’t need to have bath. Your senses will be calm during that time. They would have taken rest till then. During that state of rest of the senses whatever you think of God, it will get ingrained into you. You recollect the forgotten things. You have to start your prayers during that Satvic time. Thinking who will get up at 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock, many may get up at 8 o’clock. Elsewhere, students get up at 9 o’clock and go to school without even washing their face. They are brothers of Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana in the epic Ramayana) and no one else! Get up at 4 am and finish all your morning ablutions. Wash your face and sit silently in happiness. Wash your face so that you will not feel sleepy. If you remember these subtle aspects, meditation becomes easy for you. Same is the case in the evening also. After coming back from college, you have time from 4 pm to 8 pm. Play games. At around 6 pm, wash your hands and legs and sit silently for 5 minutes at least. Dhyana is only for a period of two minutes and 24 seconds. You don’t need to sit for hours together. As you practice this, you become more and more pure. You try this and your happiness, your luster and your purity will improve significantly.

These days, young boys and girls are spending their energy in evil and wicked thoughts. Hence their faces appear diseased. There has to be brilliance or glow on students’ faces. Purity is the reason for brilliance. If there is purity within, your faces will be glowing. What is the reason for you being so dull? The nature of your thoughts alone is the reason. Impurity is the main reason. Hence cultivate purity. As you develop purity, you become young. Not even a single disease enters your body. Try and achieve this.

  1. Sai Ram I visited Baba during the 1980 period. Before I met him physically in Puttapati. I used to read sanarathi magazine. Baba discourse and especially his statement and sentence such as "see God in everyone" appeared in nearly every monthly discourse issue. I felt good about the statement and its meaning and I tried to practice this sayings / statement literally by seeing everything such as dogs, cats, table, and anything that my eyes look at regardless of whether or not they are good or bad. Over a period of one year, I noticed that I began to feel peaceful about everything and not disturbed by the good and bad that is happening outside my worldly and personal life. From then onward , I began to understand that the power of this statement "seeing God in everyone" It will purify our thoughts daily even though we may not appreciate it first.Initially it practice is like a simple thinking process. As times goes on, our thought pattern likes/ dislikes/ sensous thought becomes less and less dominant. gradually, OUR thoughts becoming purer, and our action will slowly changed EVEN THOUGH THE WORLD AND ITS SUFFERINGS IS STILL THE SAME. We becomes more and more peaceful.
What is the lesson learned from this practice of seeing God in everyone? It value is this>...We can break off the present Bhava roga ( Physical existence of physical birth and death at tha moment instantly without fear of death or fear of worldly diseases, difficulty. That means each time when we look at everything as god presence, the current cycle of physical birth/ and physical death consequences is broken off. we don,t have follow the sensuous impact linked with physical bodies attachment. It is a life that is not marked by current physical birth and death cycle difficulty. We are free to choose and not helplessly as bounded animals species. Now I realised that the Gopis and Gopas that lived during the time of Krisna are beings not bound by sensory living and they represent the most refined human -divine species which always follow Avatars lineage in their existence.
